I pledged in fall 2021, which means I was basically a lab rat for whatever Greek life became after COVID scrambled everything. No one had a playbook. Alumni kept saying things like "back in my day" and describing traditions we literally could not do anymore. Chapter presidents were making stuff up as they went. And honestly? Some of what got invented in that chaos turned out to be better than what came before.

Every recruitment cycle, I watched the same thing happen from my seat on Panhellenic council. PNMs would walk into the first round of events wearing outfits so coordinated, so clearly researched, so obviously assembled for the specific purpose of impressing sorority women - and the effect was the opposite of what they intended. The members clocked it immediately. It reads as desperate, even when it isn't. And that perception, fair or not, follows you through the rest of the week.

Indiana University's Beta Chi Theta fraternity got hit with a suspension over the summer, and honestly, the timing alone says something. Suspensions that drop when most students are off campus have a way of getting buried - fewer people paying attention, less campus outrage, quicker news cycle. Whether that's intentional or just how these things shake out, I don't know. But it's a pattern worth noticing.

Ole Miss Greek life just added over 3,000 new members. Three thousand. That's not a recruitment cycle, that's a population migration. For context, some entire universities don't have 3,000 students total, and Ole Miss just absorbed that many people into sororities and fraternities in a single recruitment season. If you're not impressed by that number, you might need to recalibrate your sense of scale.

There's a version of the Greek life story that ends badly academically - the guy who pledged hard in the fall, lost the thread on his GPA, and spent the next two years trying to dig out of a hole he didn't see coming. I know that guy. I've been close to being that guy. But I also know the brothers who walked across that stage in four years, landed jobs before graduation, and somehow seemed less stressed than everyone else doing it. The difference wasn't luck.

Florida Atlantic University's Student Government Senate just voted to fund fraternity and sorority life expansion on campus, and I genuinely don't think enough people are paying attention to what that actually means. This isn't a ribbon-cutting moment. This is a structural decision - one that will shape which chapters get resources, how recruitment pipelines grow, and ultimately who holds power in Greek governance at FAU for the next decade.
