University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee - UWM Overview

  About Greek Life at UWM

UWM is a large urban commuter university sitting right in the heart of Milwaukee, and that commuter culture shapes just about everything on campus — including how Greek life fits in. The system here is on the smaller side relative to the school's total enrollment, but there's a real mix of organizations spanning multiple councils.

On the fraternity side, you've got IFC chapters like Sigma Chi, Kappa Sigma, Alpha Epsilon Pi, Delta Sigma Phi, Phi Sigma Kappa, Alpha Sigma Phi, and Triangle, plus the professional engineering-focused Triangle chapter rounding things out. The NPHC presence is solid too, with fraternities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta all represented. Sororities include Panhellenic chapters like Gamma Phi Beta and Alpha Omicron Pi alongside NPHC organizations Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta.

Because UWM draws heavily from Milwaukee and the surrounding suburbs, a lot of students commute or live off campus, which means Greek life doesn't dominate social life the way it might at a traditional residential flagship. It's more of a community within the broader campus rather than the center of it. That said, chapters here are genuinely active and involved in philanthropy and campus events throughout the year.

Don't expect a Greek Row. Most chapters don't maintain large dedicated houses the way you'd see at a Big Ten school like Madison up the road. Recruitment tends to be lower-key and more personal because of the school's commuter nature — it's easier to connect with chapters through campus events and direct outreach than through a packed formal recruitment week.

NPHC chapters here follow their own intake processes separate from IFC and Panhellenic recruitment, which is standard nationally. If you're interested in going that route, connecting with chapter members directly or through the Office of Student Involvement is the typical starting point. Overall, UWM's Greek community is tighter-knit and more intentional than what you'd find at a huge residential campus, which tends to mean members are involved because they genuinely want to be.
