Samford University - SU Overview

  About Greek Life at SU

Samford University is a private Baptist-affiliated school in Homewood, Alabama, just outside Birmingham, and its Greek system reflects the tight-knit, faith-influenced culture you'd expect from a campus that size. It's not a massive state school system, but Greek life is genuinely woven into the social fabric here in a way that's hard to miss.

The system includes IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities, along with NPHC representation through historically Black organizations like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Alpha Phi Alpha, and others. That gives the overall Greek community more range than you might assume from a smaller private school. On the fraternity side, you've got chapters like Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Alpha Tau Omega. Sororities include Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Omicron Pi, Phi Mu, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Delta Delta, and others.

Formal recruitment for Panhellenic sororities follows a structured process with multiple rounds, which is pretty standard. IFC recruitment tends to be a bit more informal by comparison. Because Samford is a smaller campus, the process feels more personal than what you'd see at a large SEC school — you're likely to run into the same people multiple times, and word travels fast.

One thing to know: Samford doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter-owned houses the way many large public universities do. Chapters are active on campus but without the kind of sprawling house culture you'd see somewhere like Alabama or Auburn. Social events, philanthropy work, and intramural involvement are the main ways chapters stay visible on campus.

Philanthropy is a real part of how chapters operate here, which fits with the university's broader emphasis on service and community engagement. Chapters regularly put on fundraisers and community-focused events throughout the year. Greek organizations also tend to overlap heavily with other campus involvement — student government, sports, ministry groups — so membership often slots into a broader picture of campus life rather than standing on its own.
