University of Dayton - UD Overview

  About Greek Life at UD

Dayton is a mid-size Catholic university in southwestern Ohio, and its Greek system is a real part of campus social life without completely dominating it. The school draws a lot of students from the Midwest and Northeast, and Greek organizations fit into a broader social scene that also revolves around the student neighborhood known as "The Ghetto" — a stretch of off-campus houses where upperclassmen tend to congregate regardless of affiliation.

The system is organized across a few different councils. IFC covers the traditional men's fraternities, Panhellenic covers the women's sororities, and NPHC represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities on campus. That gives UD a more complete Greek structure than a lot of schools its size. You've got chapters like Sigma Nu, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Phi Kappa Psi on the men's side, and Chi Omega, Zeta Tau Alpha, Pi Beta Phi, and others on the Panhellenic side. Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta round out the NPHC presence.

Recruitment at UD runs pretty much how you'd expect at a school this size. Panhellenic formal recruitment happens in the fall and is structured with rounds and preference events. IFC tends to be a bit more informal with continuous open recruitment throughout the year, though there are organized rush events too. NPHC chapters do intake on their own schedules, typically through interest meetings and a more process-driven membership intake.

Housing works a little differently here than at big state schools. Most chapters don't have traditional Greek Row houses — instead, members tend to live in the off-campus neighborhood alongside the general student population. Some chapters have chapter rooms or reserved spaces on campus, but it's not the kind of setup where you see a row of massive houses lined up next to each other.

Philanthropy is a consistent thread across chapters here, which fits with UD's broader mission-driven identity as a Marianist institution. Chapters do community service and fundraising events throughout the year, and that culture of giving back is genuinely woven into how organizations present themselves on campus.
