William Paterson University - WPU Overview

  About Greek Life at WPU

William Paterson University is a mid-size public school in Wayne, New Jersey — about 20 miles outside New York City — and its Greek system reflects the kind of commuter-heavy, diverse campus culture you'd expect from a North Jersey state school. It's not a campus where Greek life dominates the social calendar the way it does at big SEC or Big Ten schools, but there's a real community here for students who want to find it.

The system is organized across multiple councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) covers the traditionally white-founded fraternities like Tau Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Pi, Alpha Phi Delta, and Kappa Delta Rho. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) — also called the Divine Nine — has a strong presence here with chapters including Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Phi Beta. There's also representation from Latino-founded organizations like Lambda Sigma Upsilon and Lambda Theta Phi, which reflects the broader demographic makeup of the student body. On the sorority side, you've got chapters like Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Tau, and Theta Phi Alpha.

Recruitment processes vary by council. IFC chapters typically hold informal recruitment in the fall and spring, and it's generally a lower-pressure process compared to what you'd see at larger schools. NPHC chapters follow an intake process that runs on their own timeline and tends to be more selective and structured. It's worth understanding those differences going in, because they're pretty distinct experiences.

Since WPU doesn't have a traditional Greek Row or chapter houses, the community operates mostly through campus events, student union spaces, and off-campus gatherings. Chapters stay active through community service, step shows, philanthropic events, and campus programming. NPHC step shows in particular tend to draw solid attendance from the broader student body and are some of the more visible Greek events on campus.

Because so many WPU students commute, Greek life functions more as an opt-in community than a default social infrastructure. Students who do go Greek often say it's one of the main ways they built lasting connections on campus.
