College of William & Mary - WM Overview

  About Greek Life at WM

William & Mary is a small public research university in Williamsburg, Virginia — colonial town, tight campus, about six thousand undergrads — and the Greek system is a genuine piece of the social fabric here. It's not a massive state school where half the student body goes Greek, but it's also not an afterthought. The community is active and well-established, with chapters spanning IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC councils.

IFC covers the bulk of the fraternities on campus, with a solid lineup of national chapters like Sigma Chi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and a bunch of others. Panhellenic sororities include the big national names — Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Delta Delta Delta, Pi Beta Phi, Kappa Alpha Theta, and more. NPHC is also present through organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, and Phi Beta Sigma, which operate on a different recruitment timeline and membership process than the IFC and Panhellenic chapters.

Rush at W&M tends to be pretty low-key compared to big SEC or ACC schools. Panhellenic formal recruitment happens in the fall and follows the structured rounds format you'd expect. IFC recruitment is generally more casual and spread out. Neither process feels like the high-pressure, weeks-long spectacle you'd see at a school like Alabama or Ole Miss — W&M students tend to be a bit more understated about the whole thing.

On the housing front, most fraternities have lodges or chapter spaces on the back side of campus rather than large stand-alone houses, and sororities are housed in residence hall-style facilities. It's a different setup than a traditional Greek Row, but chapters still host events and maintain a consistent presence on campus.

Philanthropy and service are a real part of the culture here, which fits the academic profile of the school. W&M attracts a lot of students who are balancing Greek membership with honors programs, varsity athletics, and serious extracurriculars, so chapters tend to reflect that mix. Social events happen, but the identity of most chapters isn't built entirely around parties the way it might be at a larger party school.
