Washington University in St. Louis - WUSTL Overview

  About Greek Life at WUSTL

WashU is a small, elite research university in St. Louis with a student body that's academically intense but also knows how to have a good time — and the Greek system is a real part of that social fabric. It's not a giant SEC school where half the campus goes Greek, but it's not an afterthought either. The system is sizable for a school of WashU's size, with IFC and Panhellenic councils covering the traditional fraternity and sorority chapters, and a strong NPHC presence through historically Black fraternities and sororities including Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and others.

IFC rush at WashU is typically in the fall and is relatively low-key compared to big state schools. Panhellenic recruitment follows a more structured process. Neither is the high-pressure gauntlet you might picture from SEC schools. People generally describe the atmosphere as more relaxed, which fits with WashU's overall culture — competitive academically but not cutthroat socially.

Fraternities at WashU tend to have houses or chapter spaces, and those houses are a genuine center of social life on weekends. The Fraternity Quad area is well-known on campus. Parties, mixers, and Greek-sponsored events are a consistent part of the undergraduate social scene, especially for first and second-year students still building their social circles.

Philanthropy is taken seriously across chapters here. Sororities especially put effort into their philanthropic events, which often draw participation from across campus. There's also a co-ed professional fraternity presence, including Delta Sigma Pi and Alpha Chi Sigma, which appeals to students who want the networking and community aspects of Greek membership without the traditional social chapter structure.

Overall, going Greek at WashU puts you in a community that's pretty well-integrated into campus life without fully defining it. Plenty of students who don't go Greek still show up to events, and plenty of Greek members are just as tied up in research labs or student orgs as they are in their chapters.
