University of Vermont - UVM Overview

  About Greek Life at UVM

UVM is a mid-size public research university in Burlington, Vermont, and the Greek system here is a real but not overwhelming part of campus life. Burlington itself is a college town with a lot going on — bars, music, outdoor culture — so Greek life coexists with a pretty active independent social scene rather than dominating it.

The system runs through two main governing bodies: the Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the fraternities, and the Panhellenic Council governs the sororities. There's a solid number of chapters on both sides, with fraternities outnumbering sororities, which is pretty typical. Some of the names you'll see around campus include Sigma Phi Epsilon, Pi Kappa Alpha, Delta Tau Delta, and Kappa Sigma on the fraternity side, and Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Delta Delta, Pi Beta Phi, and Kappa Alpha Theta among others on the Panhellenic side. There's also Sigma Phi Society and Acacia, which operate a bit outside the mainstream IFC mold.

Rush at UVM follows a fairly standard structure. Panhellenic recruitment is more formal, with scheduled rounds and a structured preference process in the fall. Fraternity recruitment tends to be more casual and spread out, with chapters hosting events and getting to know potential new members over a few weeks.

Housing is part of the picture here — several fraternities have chapter houses, which naturally makes them more visible on campus and gives those chapters a built-in social hub. Not every chapter has its own house, though, so the experience can vary depending on which org you're looking at.

Philanthropy is a consistent thread across chapters. Most organizations run at least one major fundraiser or community service event each year, and that's pretty embedded in how chapters present themselves both on and off campus. UVM's culture leans toward community awareness and outdoor activity, and you can see some of that reflected in how Greek orgs engage with campus and local causes.

Overall, going Greek at UVM means joining a system that's active and connected but not the only show in town — chapters here operate alongside a busy campus and city social scene rather than apart from it.
