University of San Francisco - USF Overview

  About Greek Life at USF

USF is a mid-size Jesuit university in the heart of San Francisco, and its Greek system reflects the school's overall character — smaller, academically focused, and embedded in one of the most expensive cities in the country. The community is intimate compared to big state schools, but there's genuine range in the types of organizations represented here.

The chapters at USF span a few different councils. IFC covers the fraternities, Panhellenic covers the traditional sororities, and there's also a presence from NPHC and Multicultural Greek Council organizations — which means the Greek community here is more varied than you might expect given the overall size. Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Delta Theta represent on the fraternity side, while sororities include Delta Zeta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Delta Delta Delta, and Lambda Sigma Gamma, among others. NPHC chapters like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Delta Sigma Theta also have an active presence on campus.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row here. USF doesn't have the housing setup you'd see at a large state school — chapters generally don't have dedicated houses, so social events and chapter life happen through campus spaces and off-campus venues around the city. That shapes things quite a bit. San Francisco itself is a huge part of the social experience, and Greek chapters tend to work within that rather than trying to compete with it.

Recruitment processes vary by council. IFC and Panhellenic typically run more structured formal recruitment periods, while MGC and NPHC chapters often use interest meetings and intake processes on their own timelines throughout the year. Because the system is smaller, the recruitment process tends to feel a lot more personal than at a big university where you're moving through dozens of chapters in a week.

Philanthropy and service are a real part of what Greek orgs do here, which fits with USF's broader Jesuit mission around community engagement. Chapters regularly put together events tied to their national philanthropies, and that culture of giving back is pretty consistent across councils. It's not just a checkbox — it tends to be something chapters actually take seriously.
