University of New Mexico - UNM Overview

  About Greek Life at UNM

Situated in Albuquerque at the edge of the high desert, UNM is a large public research university with a campus culture that leans heavily toward its Division I athletics, its arts scene, and its deep connection to the Southwest. The Greek system here is a smaller piece of that bigger picture, but it's a real and active one with both IFC and Panhellenic councils operating on campus.

The IFC side has several well-known national fraternities represented, including Alpha Tau Omega, Kappa Sigma, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Chi, Phi Delta Theta, Lambda Chi Alpha, and Pi Kappa Phi. On the Panhellenic side, you've got Alpha Chi Omega, Chi Omega, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Pi Beta Phi, and Sigma Alpha Omega. That's a solid lineup of nationals for a school this size, even if the overall Greek population is a smaller percentage of the student body compared to schools in the South or Midwest.

UNM doesn't have a traditional Greek Row the way some bigger state schools do. Housing situations vary by chapter, and the Greek presence is more distributed across campus and the surrounding neighborhoods rather than concentrated in one area. That gives the community a somewhat different feel than what you'd find at a school where Greek Row is the center of the social universe.

Recruitment follows the standard IFC and Panhellenic formats — informal events and structured rush periods in the fall, with some chapters also recruiting in the spring. Because the system is on the smaller side, rush tends to feel a little more personal and less overwhelming than at bigger Greek schools. Philanthropy is a consistent part of chapter life here, with organizations regularly putting on fundraising events tied to their national causes throughout the academic year.

Greek life at UNM coexists alongside a lot of other strong social communities on campus — student orgs, club sports, the arts, and a pretty active off-campus scene in Albuquerque. It's not the dominant social force on campus, but the chapters that are here are genuinely active and have maintained a steady presence at the university for years.
