University of New Hampshire - UNH Overview

  About Greek Life at UNH

UNH is a mid-size public research university in Durham, New Hampshire, and the Greek system there is a real part of campus social life without being the only game in town. It's not the kind of school where every weekend revolves around the Row, but chapters are active and visible, especially in the fall semester when recruitment kicks off.

The system runs through two main governing bodies: the Interfraternity Council (IFC) overseeing the men's fraternities, and the Panhellenic Council governing the sororities. You've got a solid number of chapters on both sides, with fraternities including well-known nationals like Sigma Chi, Alpha Tau Omega, Lambda Chi Alpha, Theta Chi, and Sigma Nu, plus a few others. On the sorority side, chapters like Alpha Phi, Chi Omega, Alpha Chi Omega, Kappa Delta, and Alpha Xi Delta are part of the Panhellenic council. There's also Sigma Alpha, which is a co-ed agricultural fraternity that reflects UNH's land-grant roots through its College of Life Sciences and Agriculture.

Housing is part of the picture at UNH. Several fraternities have chapter houses, which makes them a bit more central to the social scene, particularly for underclassmen looking for events and a community outside the dorms. Sororities generally don't have dedicated houses in the same way, which is pretty typical for schools in New England.

Recruitment for IFC chapters tends to be informal in the fall, with formal structured recruitment happening for Panhellenic sororities. If you're interested in going Greek, fall semester is when most of the action happens. Philanthropy is a consistent thread across chapters — most orgs run annual events tied to their national causes, and community service hours are a standard expectation.

Durham is a small college town, so Greek life fills a real social niche there. UNH doesn't have the sprawling Greek Row of a massive SEC school, but the chapters that are active tend to be genuinely plugged into campus life, from intramural sports to student government to philanthropy weekends.
