University of Memphis - UM Overview

  About Greek Life at UM

The University of Memphis is a large public research university sitting right in the heart of one of the most culturally rich cities in the South, and its Greek system reflects that energy in a pretty interesting way. With chapters spanning IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC, the system covers a solid range of organizations across both historically white and historically Black fraternities and sororities. That mix gives the overall community a structure you don't always see at schools this size.

IFC fraternities include familiar national names like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Phi Gamma Delta, among others. On the Panhellenic side, you've got chapters like Alpha Delta Pi, Delta Gamma, Phi Mu, Pi Beta Phi, and several more. NPHC is also active here, with Divine Nine organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, and others maintaining a real presence on campus. That's a decent number of options when you add it all up.

Memphis is a commuter-heavy school, which does shape how Greek life functions day-to-day. It's not the kind of campus where Greek Row dominates everything and you can't escape it — it's more woven into student activity life than it is the default social setting. That said, chapters here are genuinely active. Philanthropy events, step shows, and Greek-sponsored programming show up consistently throughout the academic year and draw attention from the broader student body, not just members.

Rush and recruitment follow pretty standard national formats — IFC does formal recruitment in the fall, Panhellenic runs a structured process as well, and NPHC intake operates on its own timeline as it typically does everywhere. Housing situations vary by chapter; some IFC fraternities have chapter facilities, but it's not a fully house-centric system the way you'd see at a flagship state school with a dedicated Greek Row. A lot of chapter life happens through events, meetings, and campus spaces rather than residential houses.

The city itself is a big part of what makes going Greek at Memphis feel different from a traditional college-town experience. Beale Street, the broader Memphis music and food scene, and the urban campus environment all factor into how chapters socialize and recruit. It's a system that operates alongside a city rather than inside a campus bubble.
