University of Maine - UM Overview

  About Greek Life at UM

Nestled in Orono, Maine — a small college town about fifteen minutes from Bangor — UMaine is a mid-size flagship state school with a Greek system that's genuinely woven into campus social life. The University of Maine isn't huge, but it draws a loyal, outdoorsy student body from across New England, and the fraternity and sorority scene reflects that tight-knit regional character.

The system is governed primarily by IFC on the fraternity side and Panhellenic on the sorority side. There's a solid number of chapters active on campus, covering both national organizations and some locally rooted ones. You've got well-known names like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Beta Theta Pi, and Phi Gamma Delta on the IFC side, and sororities like Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Pi Beta Phi, Delta Zeta, and others under Panhellenic. It's a pretty full roster for a school this size.

Housing is a real part of the culture here. Many of the larger fraternities have chapter houses, and those houses tend to be social hubs — especially during football season and Maine's notoriously short but intense fall weather window. Winter in Orono is no joke, so a lot of social activity naturally gravitates toward indoor spaces, and chapter houses fill that role.

Rush and recruitment happen in the fall and spring, with formal Panhellenic recruitment following a structured process and IFC rush being a bit more informal and spread out. Because UMaine isn't a massive campus, the rush experience tends to feel more personal than at bigger state schools — you're more likely to actually get to know people in the houses you're visiting rather than shuffling through a factory-style process.

Philanthropy events are a consistent part of Greek life here, with chapters putting on fundraisers and service events throughout the academic year. It's part of how a lot of chapters stay visible on a campus where Greek life coexists with a strong club sports culture, a big hockey program, and an active outdoor recreation scene.

Overall, Greek life at UMaine occupies a meaningful but not all-consuming slice of campus culture — it's one of several strong social options, and chapters tend to reflect the down-to-earth, New England sensibility of the broader student body.
