University of Kansas - KU Overview

  About Greek Life at KU

Football Saturdays and Greek Row go hand in hand at this Big Ten school sitting in the heart of Lawrence, Kansas. KU is a large public research university with a student body in the tens of thousands, and the Greek system is a genuine part of campus social life here — not just background noise.

The system is organized across a few different councils. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the majority of the fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council governs the sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities on campus, including chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Beta Sigma, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Zeta Phi Beta. Altogether, there are a solid number of fraternities and sororities active at KU, giving students a real range of options when it comes to finding their people.

IFC recruitment at KU is structured and happens primarily in the fall, with chapters hosting events across Greek Row on Ohio Street and the surrounding area. Most of the larger IFC fraternities have chapter houses, and those houses are pretty central to the social scene on weekends. Panhellenic formal recruitment is also a big deal — sorority rush at KU tends to be well-organized and draws a significant number of women each year.

Lawrence itself has a lot of personality as a college town, and that energy feeds into Greek culture here. Philanthropy events, intramural sports, and involvement in student government are all common ways Greek members stay visible on campus. The community tends to be active in university-wide traditions like Hawk Week and events tied to KU basketball season — which, as any Jayhawk will tell you, is practically a religion in Lawrence.

Housing is a notable part of the IFC experience in particular. Many of the larger fraternities own or operate chapter houses, which makes Greek Row a distinct part of the campus geography. Sorority housing arrangements vary by chapter, with some having houses and others operating primarily out of residential facilities. NPHC chapters typically don't have dedicated houses but maintain active presences through programming and events across campus.
