how often does a pnm get their second choice?

by: pnm067

subject. was wondering if it’s common or uncommon to be matched with your second choice after pref. i know it happens, but is it 50/50?

It depends where you are on each sorority bid list. If you are 10th on sorority A’s list and 15th on sorority B’s list, you are going sorority A, and that takes precedent over what you ranked. So you may want to go B but you’re A.

That is incorrect.

Not true, as long as you are on the list of bids for house A before House A makes their quota you will get House A no matter where you are ranked on House B. That is where the PNM‘s preference comes into the equation.

You have a statistically higher chance of getting your first choice. The NPC overall rate is better than 80% for your first choice, but of course there is no guarantee.

Preference is the only round that gives the sorority's and the pnm's ranks equal weight.

It happened to me. I was shocked when I opened my bid, but looking back I realize that it was the best thing for me and I found my lifelong friends in my 2nd choice. TBH with such big mc’s you can find your people in almost any house.

Bid Matching Explained

After pref and everyone signs her card, quota is set and then here's how it goes:

You have ranked your houses 1 & 2, and the sororities have ranked all their pnm's in order on their bid list. The algorithm starts at the top of a sorority's ranked list and tries to match with the pnm's who put them at 1. If you are high enough on your 1's bid list to match with them before they reach quota, you will get that bid. If you are not high enough to match before they reach quota, then the algorithm will try to match you with your 2. If you are high enough on their list to match with them before they reach quota you will get that bid. If you aren't high enough to match with either house, you will be placed as a quota addition. The algorithm will try to place you with your 1, but will also consider your place on both bid lists, the number of quota additions to place at those houses, and the relative sizes of the chapters.

Quota Additions are what guarantees a bid if you rank both houses. If you SIP and you are not high enough on that one house's bid list to match before they reach quota, then you are out of the process and will not get a bid. No quota additions for SIP.

If you only have one house at pref and put them on your card you will get that bid.

This is correct! Don’t SIP unless you would never, ever, ever want your 2nd choice.

The actives don't know anything about which pnm's put their house first or second on their MRABA card, they are HAPPY to welcome their new members and after bid day it doesn't matter to anyone and no one really cares or talks about it. Most members got their first choice when they went through rush and the ones that got their second almost always end up loving their chapter.
