dropping

by: 123

I actually only got invited back to Gamma Phi although I feel like I had incredible conversations at three of my other houses. I was shook when none of them wanted me and I'm very confused on the imperfect processes. Can I get a show of hands of those in similar position as me?

Also, to be clear this post does not mean to indicate any tone of superiority above any houses. I just simply thought that after hearing stories of girls who "found their home the time they stepped into the house" I would find mine too. However, this feeling obviously isn't mutual. I feel like at the end of the day it just boils down to Berkeley having too many people and the chapters just had to make cuts. On the other side, it was evident that a KKG was telling her sister during Unity Day how the pledge class was "already chosen" so what was the point.

I didn't come in wanting a particular house, I was rejected by 7 out of the 12 from the first round, and I'm not being selective. Now, it just boiled down to one, and I didn't find genuine connection here so I'm dropping. There won't be another chance as I am a junior, but it was still interesting to go through the process and see its faults.

That's my story, and I want to hear some of others who felt the same way, or perhaps with a different perspective.

Release Figures Management or RFM is the reason so many women are getting cut early from so many houses. The more popular a house is, the fewer people they are allowed to invite back to each round. To get (example) 50 people to show up to a party, Pi Phi probably only needs to invite 50 people because most everyone wants that invite and will say yes. Gamma phi on the other hand might need to invite twice or three times that. It sounds snap judgmental I know, but the fact is it’s better than when the top sororities could string someone along till pref making them think they wanted them (as all top sororities are good at that). The PNM cuts the groups that might ACTUALLY want her and then ends up with nothing on bid day.

So the minute you don’t get asked back, you need to put that house in the rear view because maybe they did like you, but not enough to invite you over someone else.

The NPC's RFM Method of placing pnms is the reason UCB is not able to use a non-gty method during formal recruitment. I heartily suggest those who have posted on UCB GR pages regarding their strong distaste for all things RFM (because they do not enjoy meeting 1000 pnms and having to bid 50 of them when they feel only 25 are worth their chapter's time and efforts) best become more panhellenic women in order to eventually move-up into their NPC group's panhellenic exec board, which might guarantee one of them the NPC Chairmanship at some future point whereby they may rant all they want against RFM and possibly change the mutually agreed upon NPC RFM rules.

@thusandso....To hide behind NPC RFM propaganda and not address the issues that are sinking our system frankly isn't helpful at all. There must be some changes to recruitment to deal with the physical house size differentials, eliminate DS from panhel as zero value added Non NPC member and multiple failing houses in the system. I estimated that in my house after legacy and reference cases we needed to find no more than 25 people during recruitment. Long recruitment with over 1,000 to find 25 people? Crazy waste of time. People only pull out the term 'be more panhellenic' when they want you to do something that is a waste of time and hugely expensive. Because of everything being mismanged over the past 3 years we can't gty housing, have an awful points system and frankly can't meet everyone in the house after 3 years of huge classes. To me being panhellenic is looking at the big picture OVER THE LONG TERM. Nothing about what has been going on has done anything to improve my house. The situation has gotten worse and not better and PNMs place no value on gty bid 'gift' and so bail when they don't get the 1-2 houses they think they deserve. I think my house would be better off excusing ourselves from recruitment and simply doing COB and using the extra money for things that are important to us rather than have 1,000 people come through the house that we will never see again.

How very unpanhellenic; but you already know that.

@nic The intended purpose of RFM is to give all interested pnms at formal recruitment's nationwide a fair chance at becoming an initiated member of an NPC sorority. There are various valid reasons pnms are released from recruitment, just as pnms choose valid reasons to decline party invites and/or bids.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If Cal's Panhellenic has a valid, legitimate beef with the present NPC RFM method of formal recruitment they ought to collectively present their side of Cal's allegedly horrendous greek system status WITH POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS FOR THE CAL SYSTEM to nationally-elected sorority members in control of panhellenic response within each of the 26 individual NPC sororities.

Targeting official national executive board panhel members within all 26 NPC panhellenic groups makes sure everyone can follow and discuss your concerns from the moment Cal's panhel first complains..

However if you, nic, are the only one having the beef with NPC's PFM methods I suggest you personally explain that beef to your very own sorority's elected national panhellenic representatives. They will know how to politely respond to any issues you present, and may be able to more officially present your concerns to those who need to hear it most.

@123 mentions her feeling of belonging to particular groups was not mutualized. It's too bad some women will have their feelings hurt in this manner, but recruitment is often thought of as mutual selection and thus 123 was shown her mutual match here was not to be.
