dropping

by: 123

I actually only got invited back to Gamma Phi although I feel like I had incredible conversations at three of my other houses. I was shook when none of them wanted me and I'm very confused on the imperfect processes. Can I get a show of hands of those in similar position as me?

Also, to be clear this post does not mean to indicate any tone of superiority above any houses. I just simply thought that after hearing stories of girls who "found their home the time they stepped into the house" I would find mine too. However, this feeling obviously isn't mutual. I feel like at the end of the day it just boils down to Berkeley having too many people and the chapters just had to make cuts. On the other side, it was evident that a KKG was telling her sister during Unity Day how the pledge class was "already chosen" so what was the point.

I didn't come in wanting a particular house, I was rejected by 7 out of the 12 from the first round, and I'm not being selective. Now, it just boiled down to one, and I didn't find genuine connection here so I'm dropping. There won't be another chance as I am a junior, but it was still interesting to go through the process and see its faults.

That's my story, and I want to hear some of others who felt the same way, or perhaps with a different perspective.

keep in mind that some chapters will do continuous open bidding (give out more bids as girls from their pledge class don’t accept or drop), so there will be opportunities available if you look for them. I don’t think it would be inappropriate for you to send emails to membership vps of chapters you would be on snap bidding to expressing your continued interest in the chapter should they have spots to fill (though just word it carefully). Or if you have any friends in chapters you like, keep in touch with them. FFR definitely an imperfect process, and I’m sorry it didn’t work for you.

It’s also totally ok and normal to do spring recruitment as a junior! Plus there are people who do rush as seniors.

if you didn't attend tonight's event, could you still be eligible for "continued bidding"?

Two things
1. Agree with “ not yet”. You still have three chances...continuous open bidding after Fall Formal Recruitment is over if houses need more members to make ceiling. Ceiling, is calculated as the average of the 13 chapters will be calculated after bid day acceptance s are known for each chapter. Houses may bid anyone who is not in a chapter at any time outside of official recruitment until they reach ceiling. Chapters will then know if they have room to take more members. Spring rush is an option and seniors do rush and join so next year fall is really a viable option.
2. You don’t have to have been at Pref... or even to have rushed to be eligible for a chaper to bid you. All you need is to be a full time student at Cal and for the chapter to know you are interested. Then they can reach out to you to see if there is a fit. So do reach out to chapters who to think might have room. They will be the ones that are below average in size.

@ahh - yes, as long as you don’t receive a bid tonight (so if you single intentional preferenced and don’t get a bid or withdrew from recruitment), you’re eligible for continuous open bidding.

I am on the exact same boat. I came into recruitment with no expectations and had an open mind all throughout. Although there are some houses that I really liked, I got dropped from all of them and Gamma Phi was the only house that invited me back. It does suck because you really don't know how the girls are judging you. I was also like you and didn't really feel like there was a place for me.

Exactly how was her comment about Gamma Phi Condescending? She said Gamma Phi gave you a chance to be Greek. They did.

What makes me sad about reading this similar posts about GPhi is that if some of the people that got a bid from GPhi thought about the future instead of just today then there might be a shot to save this house and build our community. GPhi nationally is an incredible organization and the opportunity exists to build a wonderful sisterhood here at Cal. But if people just keep thinking about how things are today then nothing with this house will ever change IMO. There is a huge opportunity for a group of like minded strong women to join this house and build it OVER TIME into something that our system needs which is another strong house. Building a chapter takes time and I have been watching now for 4 years when people say no to GPhi. By saying NO to GPhi you are saying NO to Greeklife at Cal. You had an option and your choice was to turn it down. Our system needs ever house to be strong. People say they came to recruitment with an open mind but if you turn down your last option then your mind is not open IT IS CLOSED! We have too few spots and simply too many people. If we lose GPhi then our system becomes WEAKER AND NOT STRONGER. This typical 'me me me' and 'all about today' thinking will bring down GPhi and make recruitment next year even worse especially if we lose at least one other house which seems highly likely. Totally pathetic. I have been watching this for 4 years and every year gets worse as more people drop early and complain and then say they were open minded.

I actually agree. I've watched for 3 years and each year there are more people and fewer spots. People drop early because they feel only one house will do for them and then gripe that they don't get a greek experience. Every year the entitlement factor gets worse. Memo to PNMs: You are not entitled to the single house of your dreams. Sorry you are sad and then you drop out. Each year in our house we argue alot because we don't want another big pledge class. Its been the same argument every year and yet we get another big class where we don't know people and it takes forever to integrate. It sucks. Panhel sucks and I am so tired of no leadership for yet another year. We don't want big classes but we have to have them because we are forced to due to the fact that we don't have a strong system. We will probably lose 2 houses over the next couple of years. We have an independent house that adds no value to our system as they aren't national. You can't have 1,000 people only wanted 2-3 houses. That is crazy and that is not what greek life is all about. But the 1,000 people coming through don't really care about greek life, until they realize that by dropping they will never have it. So sick of this crazy cycle with zero changing. Saw so many weepy people today it was crazy. Do the math. There was no way to get the house of your dream. But that didn't mean another house couldn't have worked for you. Entire thing is pathetic. So angry.

@pippa - what would you propose to change about how recruitment is run? The only way pledge classes would get smaller would be to remove guaranteed bids for PNMs who maximize their options, wouldn’t it? I understand that it can be hard to get to know everyone, but the alternative would be shutting more people out of Greek life unless there’s another option I can’t think of right now.

You had an option and didn't take it. You didn't want or deserve a greek experience IMO. Cal is unlike other schools where you can go through recruitment again and have an option. But keep in mind that the option you had as a first year probably won't be any different the next time around. So, why not take that option the first time around and enjoy greek life for longer? Not sure what you people are thinking about. Over time everyone mixes with everyone and you have access to parties. Instead by not joining you will be in the dorms bored looking for a party. For someone who is supposed to be smart it seems pretty stupid to me. You thought you were 'above' the house that picked 'you'. What is that saying about 'you'?

To @pippa. Options to revise the rules have been debated endlessly with no changes unfortunately. I am personally not sold on the idea that if someone maximizes their options they are guaranteed a bid has any value any more as people are dropping with bids in hand. We still have houses that don't meet quota and then turn around and use COB to try to fill the gaps. We have houses that might not be here in a few years. I don't think most PNMs realize what a gift it is to them to be guaranteed a bid if they maximize options. They don't get it. These PNMs are still dropping and our system is suffering due to the drops. Other schools have a much more brutal process with no guaranteed bid. After watching this sad situation for 3 years now I think I would support no guarantee, house set quotas and a 'lord of the flies' experience for PNMs. I honestly think all the people on here that said they have 'open minds' are LYING. They don't value a greek experience so my thinking is to make it even harder to get into a house and perhaps this might save our system. GPhi plays by the rules every year and gets screwed when they deserve to get a full class. We have dirty rushing every year (Hello to the super sus ladies at APhi and the worst of the worst THIS year was PiPhi with advance contact in the weeks ahead of rush - yep, heres looking to you on Piedmont as you were terrible!) and no penalties are ever imposed. There is alot of value in a greek experience over 4 years, not the least of which is a wonderful place to live and eat, a support network and friend groups. I don't think PNMs understand that the greek experience is available at ALL the houses and not just a couple. We also need a panhel with only national panhel members. Best to the ladies of DS but they are no national and don't share our issues. Look at the composition of Panhel now. Do you honestly think there is a shot in hell of anything changing? Nope. Worse than the day I pledged.

@pippa. Forgot to to include that if my house set the quota it preferred the number would be between 35-40 MAX. We actually would prefer fewer than this. We want everyone to be able to live in, we hate the points system and the uncertainty of not being able to live in. Yet, we have accommodated higher numbers due at much higher levels to the detriment of our sisterhood because the system is broken. I was thinking this morning over 3 years in this system what would have happened if all the wonderful people that thought they were 'above' a particular house had in fact joined that house as a 1st year. Can you imagine how fantastic our system would be today, 3 years later? Instead what we have is a system that is in worse shape than 3 years ago and in a few years could be significantly smaller. All this is happening because of PNMs thinking they deserve a particular house and that a wonderful greek experience is not available at all houses. Not sure how to break this cycle but I think the no guarantee bid option should go and houses should be able to set their own quota. Do PNMs realize that with legacy situations that most pledge classes are automatically reduced in size? Can nobody think of the future? I will never forget the sorry situation in the dorm when I was a first year and 1/2 the people in my hall dropped because 'they had a good conversation at a house and were cut blah blah blah' and they won't be treated like they were by anyone. Those people lost out and realized it too late. They scrambled for parties and their social lives were all over the place. Cal is a big place and I don't think most PNMs realize what the greek system does to transform their experience here. So tired of the same old same old happening yet again.

@up What do you mean by "most pledge classes are automatically reduced in size by legacy situations"? I am an Alpha Phi legacy and would have absolutely loved to be an Alpha Phi, but I was dropped from them. Being a legacy doesn't really seem to make a difference.

Former RC here - your house seems to have the reverse problem of several chapters. ZTA and Theta, for a specific example, have massive physical houses that they sometimes have trouble filling due to the number of beds that need to be filled. Theta sleeps something like 75, and Zeta sleeps over 80. Some chapters require living in for one year or sometimes two in order to ensure the house is filled, and some have massive waitlists to live in. If you’re looking at sororities strictly from a housing perspective, then it might make sense for chapter pledge classes to be sized proportionally to the physical house, but I think that ignores the desire for chapters to be even in size so certain organizations aren’t as blatantly more exclusive as others. I don’t think there’s a perfect solution, and just because it’s best for one chapter to reduce pledge class sizes doesn’t mean it would be best for every chapter, and I think it would have a negative impact on the culture of PHC as a whole.

@123 IMO you are part of the problem and not part of the solution to greek life here at cal. I am sure I met you this past week. I am sure I didn't remember you as I met over 1,000 people and very few names registered and forget remembering faces. It makes me sad to think that you believe you are above any particular house when we have solid houses across the board. It makes me sad that you can't look at what is important over the long term. Good luck in the dorms as my prediction is that you will be sitting there staring at walls and missing out on a greek experience at cal.

Honestly glad you dropped. You say you're not looking down on people, but you 100% are. If you'd rather drop than give it a shot for a few weeks and see if you develop a connection, you don't deserve to be in any house. Cal needs to get rid of it's guaranteed bids, then houses could drop people with bad attitudes out entirely and the whole community would get stronger.

Same thing happened to me. The PHC told me that class standing was not taken into account during rush but that was bs. I only got invited back to 3/13 houses and was eventually dropped from all but GPhi. I don't see how you can preach that Greek Life is inclusive but drop a senior without giving them a chance to return to the house to talk, at the very least. I'm just mad that I believed the PHC's lies and paid $50.

by: TbhSep 6, 2018 1:59:49 PM

As someone in a house, I understand why seeing someone rush as a senior makes little sense. Houses want someone that will grow in the house and make meaningful contributions over the years through leadership and otherwise. You wouldn’t have time to do much in a house. The first semester you’re a new member and then the next one you’re graduating.
Sororities aren’t campus clubs. Why would you decide this is for you at the twilight of your college career then complain you aren’t in kappa?

PHC should not have said that simply because they as a group have no idea what criteria each individual sorority uses to select its members.

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one. I got dropped from 7 houses too the first day too, and by the last day, by all except Gamma Phi Beta. I'm also a junior transfer. While I did like the girls in GPhiB, I knew it was not the house for me and felt so humiliated and awful having been dropped from everyone else that I just quit...honestly I think for me it was a consequence of being introverted. Since I'm introverted, I ended up having to try really hard to put myself out there and I guess I ended up sounding fake to the girls I talked to. Some houses I honestly don't know why I was dropped from them? Idk. I'm doing COB in the spring for a house I have a lot of friends in. I've heard it's much more low-key.

Do you realize that at most other schools you would have NO options as a Junior? You had an option and a good one and you turned it down. Its your loss as houses have no reason to take a senior. I don't understand your decision making process at all. I'm sad also that you won't have a greek experience as it is wonderful on so many levels.

@pie I’m a transfer. My decision-making process was to rush as early as I was able to. I was told that houses did not discriminate against transfer students, but this clearly was not the case, since almost every girl I talked to visibly lost interest in me when I mentioned I was a transfer.
