Union College - UC Overview

  About Greek Life at UC

Union College in Schenectady is a small liberal arts school with an engineering focus, and its Greek system has been part of campus life there for a long time — we're talking about one of the older Greek traditions in the country. The school has a handful of fraternities operating under IFC, a smaller Panhellenic council with a few sororities, and at least one historically Black fraternity with ties to NPHC. It's a compact system relative to larger universities, but it's been woven into the fabric of campus social life for generations.

Because Union is a smaller school, the Greek community feels more intimate than what you'd find at a big state university. There aren't dozens of chapters competing for the same pool of students — the organizations that are here tend to have pretty distinct identities. You've got longstanding IFC fraternities like Alpha Delta Phi, Chi Psi, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Theta Delta Chi, Sigma Chi, Kappa Alpha Society, and Sigma Phi Society, some of which have deep historical roots at Union specifically. On the Panhellenic side, Gamma Phi Beta, Sigma Delta Tau, and Delta Phi Epsilon make up the sorority presence. Phi Iota Alpha and Alpha Phi Alpha round out the multicultural and NPHC representation on campus.

Many of the fraternities have chapter houses on or near campus, which makes them a real social hub, especially on weekends. Rush and recruitment happen each year and tend to be pretty accessible given the school's size — it's not the hyper-competitive, huge-event-style rush you'd see at a SEC school. Philanthropy and community service are a consistent part of what chapters do, and there's usually a mix of annual social events and Greek-wide programming tied into the broader campus calendar.

Greek life at Union carries more social weight than it might at a comparable-sized school elsewhere, partly because of how long these organizations have been around and partly because the campus social scene is fairly self-contained in Schenectady. It's not the only way students build community, but it's a visible and active part of how a lot of undergrads spend their time.
