University of Miami - UM Overview

  About Greek Life at UM

Coral Gables is a beautiful, sun-soaked campus, and the social culture at the University of Miami leans heavily into that setting — and Greek life is a real part of that picture. UM is a private research university with a student body large enough to support a well-developed Greek system spread across multiple governing councils.

The IFC oversees the interfraternal fraternities, while Panhellenic governs the sororities. On top of that, UM has a solid presence of NPHC chapters — including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and others — as well as Multicultural Greek Council organizations like Phi Iota Alpha, Lambda Theta Phi, and Delta Epsilon Psi. That mix across councils gives the system a genuinely broad cross-section of communities on one campus.

Formal recruitment for IFC and Panhellenic chapters typically runs in the fall. Panhellenic recruitment follows a structured process with rounds and preference events, while IFC rush tends to be a bit more informal and spread out. If you're interested in NPHC or MGC organizations, those groups recruit on their own timelines and often have intake processes that run throughout the year.

Housing works a little differently here than at big state schools. UM chapters generally don't have traditional Greek Row houses in the way you'd see at a flagship SEC or Big Ten school. Most chapters use on-campus suites or designated residential spaces rather than standalone fraternity or sorority houses, which shapes how chapter life and social events are organized.

Philanthropy is a consistent part of how chapters here operate — most organizations run signature fundraising events and community service initiatives tied to their national foundations. Social events tend to lean into Miami's broader nightlife and entertainment scene, which is obviously a perk of being minutes from one of the most active cities in the country. The Greek system at UM is a real presence on campus without completely defining the social experience the way it might at a larger public university.
