UC Merced is the youngest campus in the UC system, and its Greek community reflects that — still developing, but genuinely active for a school of its size. There are both IFC and Panhellenic councils operating on campus, along with a Multicultural Greek Council presence, giving students a few different avenues into Greek life depending on what kind of organization they're drawn to.

The fraternity side includes chapters like Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Lambda Phi, Gamma Zeta Alpha, and Omega Delta Phi. On the sorority side, you've got Panhellenic chapters like Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Phi Mu, along with Sigma Theta Psi representing the multicultural council. It's a smaller system overall, so chapters tend to be tight-knit and individual members carry a lot of visibility on campus.

UCM doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter houses. Most socializing and events happen through campus spaces, off-campus venues, and university-sanctioned event facilities. That shapes the whole feel of Greek life here — it's less about the house party scene you might picture at a bigger state school and more about chapter events, philanthropy, and campus involvement.

Recruitment runs through the standard IFC and Panhellenic processes, with formal recruitment typically happening in the fall. Because the chapters are smaller, rush tends to feel more personal — you're getting to know the actual members pretty quickly rather than moving through massive events with hundreds of people.

Merced itself is a smaller city in the Central Valley, so the campus social scene is a bigger deal than it might be at a school located in a major metro area. Greek chapters tend to be involved in campus-wide events and philanthropy efforts, and participation in things like Greek Week and community service initiatives is a visible part of how these organizations operate. For a campus that's still growing its traditions, Greek life has carved out a real presence in student culture.
