University of California, Davis - UCD Overview

  About Greek Life at UCD

UC Davis is a large public research university in the Sacramento Valley, and its Greek system reflects the campus's generally laid-back, academically focused culture. The system here is made up of several governing councils — IFC and Panhellenic cover most of the traditional fraternities and sororities, while the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) and NPHC represent culturally-based and historically Black organizations. That mix gives the overall community a broader range of chapter types than you'd find at a lot of comparable schools.

The chapter list is solid — there are quite a few fraternities and a respectable number of sororities, with recognizable national names like Sigma Chi, Pi Kappa Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi, Delta Gamma, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Chi Omega alongside culturally-focused groups like Lambda Theta Phi, Gamma Zeta Alpha, Lambda Sigma Gamma, and Chi Delta Theta. The presence of both IFC and MGC chapters means recruitment happens on a couple of different timelines and in different formats depending on the council.

Greek life is part of the social fabric at Davis, but it's not the defining feature of campus life the way it might be at a Southern flagship or a school with a dominant football culture. UC Davis competes in Division II athletics (with some Division I exceptions), and the campus vibe tends to prioritize academics, activism, and outdoor culture. Greek organizations exist as one option among many, rather than the default path for students looking to get involved.

Most chapters at Davis don't have the sprawling row houses you'd see at a school like UCLA or Berkeley, though some do have chapter houses or off-campus properties. Rush for IFC fraternities typically happens in the fall, with Panhellenic formal recruitment following a structured process that includes rounds of visits to each chapter. Culturally-based organizations often recruit on a rolling basis throughout the year.

Philanthropy events and social functions are regular parts of chapter life here. Many chapters participate in campus-wide events, and philanthropy culture tends to be taken seriously — it's a visible part of how chapters present themselves to the campus community. The discussion activity and rating volume on this site reflect a community that's genuinely engaged, with students paying attention to the system and its organizations.
