Marquette University - MU Overview

  About Greek Life at MU

Marquette is a mid-size Jesuit university in the heart of Milwaukee, and its Greek system reflects the school's overall character — community-oriented, service-minded, and rooted in the city around it. The system isn't massive, but it's got a real presence on campus and draws consistent student involvement across both fraternities and sororities.

On the men's side, IFC oversees the fraternities, which include chapters like Delta Chi, Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi, Delta Tau Delta, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and a few others including Sigma Lambda Beta and Triangle. Panhellenic covers the sororities, with chapters like Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, Pi Beta Phi, Sigma Kappa, and Kappa Delta. There's also Alpha Omega Epsilon, an engineering sorority, which reflects Marquette's strong STEM programs. It's not an NPHC-heavy campus, but the range of organizations does offer some variety in terms of focus and membership.

One thing to know about Marquette's setup: it's an urban campus, and most chapters don't have traditional houses the way you'd see at a big state school. Social events tend to happen in rented spaces, on campus, or out in Milwaukee itself. The city becomes part of the experience, which honestly isn't a bad thing — Milwaukee has a lot going on.

Recruitment happens in the fall, and both Panhellenic and IFC run formal processes. It's not the overwhelming SEC-style rush you'd see at a school of 30,000 — it's more personal and lower-key by comparison. Philanthropy and community service are genuinely woven into chapter culture here, which makes sense given Marquette's Jesuit identity and emphasis on service. Chapters regularly organize events tied to their national philanthropy partners, and that's a consistent part of what chapters do throughout the year.

As a percentage of the overall student body, Greek life at Marquette represents a smaller slice than you'd find at large public universities, but the chapters that are here tend to be active and engaged. It's more of a close-knit scene than a dominant one, shaped heavily by the school's Catholic mission and its urban Milwaukee setting.
