Being a legacy will only get you so far with all the houses. The rest is up to you!

Legacy status matters very little. Prepare your family members now.

Thanks! I'm actually not a legacy but I was just super curious about the whole legacy myth. I actually heard that it can hurt your chances at certain houses because if they see you are a legacy at XYZ house they might drop you because they think you'll take the bid from that house and that house only. Is there any truth to this?

At least at my house we don't know if someone is a legacy at another house unless they specifically tell us during a conversation (which I highly recommend not doing). We only know if they're a legacy at our own house.

This is generally true. However, sometimes a PNM's legacy status will be mentioned in her recommendations.

Legacy status with a lot of sororities means we are required to invite you to the first invitational round (but since there are so many more legacies now, that isn't always the case.) Other than that, legacy status isn't something that most of the sororities that I know of put a lot of stock in here. At other schools, it can be nearly impossible to drop a legacy. It all depends on the school culture.

Oh and one other thing I forgot. With a lot of sororities, national policy requires that you put a legacy at the top of the bid list if they make it through to the preference round. That means a legacy in those sororities knows she will have a bid if she wants it if she gets invited to preference. It also means that a sorority better be sure they want to give a bid to a legacy before they invite her to preference. That's why a lot of legacies will get dropped right before preference.

My mom's best friend from high school was in a sorority at UF and I call her my 2nd mom. Can I use her as a legacy to help. She is as close as my mom to me.

No, only your real mom/aunt/grandmas count as legacies. Even if you're really close with her, sorry.. But like many people have said, legacy status isn't that important!

You are not her legacy but she can write a wonderful recommendation for you! The ones from someone who really knows you well and for a long time are the best.

I didn't think your aunt counted, I thought it was only mom, sister or grandma, not cousins or aunts

I think it varies depending on the sorority. Chi Omega doesn't even count grandmothers.

I was president of Chi Omega and they cut my daughter on the second day at University of Florida so for that sorority at that campus legacy has absolutely no importance.

In many houses, legacies get an automatic invite back to second round. There are usually a lot of legacies dropped after round2 so it becomes a level playing field going into round3. In many houses, legacies get put on the top of the bid list during prefs so legacies going to prefs will be guaranteed a bid at that house if they list that house as #1 on their bid card.
