rushing as a 2nd year
by: here4realsisters
i need people to be honest about their experiences, those who have dropped, those who are thinking about it, and those who are loving it. i am not sure about rushing. i want to be part of something, want make friends, want to socialize, dress up and go out more, and volunteer with kids. but i'm a little weary about how people say that sororitys are shallow, some girls are fakes, catty, etc. is maintaining an image all that necessary? how do i sell my true self in the rush process?
also, are there any introverts? how are you guys managing?

I rushed as a junior and had a full schedule with houses I loved all the way through but ended up with my 3rd choice bottom tier house. Disappointed but stayed because it was going to be my only chance and glad I did. If you want all those things above- do it. My top 2 choices were that because of their top/mid rank but my experience here with the girls is just as great. Go for it and good luck.

Go for it!! It's so much better than it seems from the outside :) I can't speak for all chapters but of the ones I have friends in, there is very little cattiness and girls usually find a solid group of friends. And you don't have to be an extrovert to enjoy greek life!! Having events to go to and socials that give you an excuse to go out is fun and keeps you busy!

KEEP AN OPEN MIND. The biggest fault with PNM's that aren't freshman is that they know reputations of sororitys that are on campus. If you like a house that is considered "bottom tier," forget about that reputation and just go in and have fun. It won't matter what sorority you're in.
Rush is hard. You'll probably cry. Keep an open mind.

I rushed as a junior and I had a great experience. I had full schedules each round and preffed at a top tier house, a middle tier house and a bottom tier house where I was a legacy. I got my first choice, middle tier house, that I absolutely love. Since I was a junior I didn't feel like my whole college experience depended on what sorority I was in, like a lot of freshman feel, so it was less stressful for me than other girls. I also had friends in a lot of sororities and I'm sure that helped. I'm glad I ended up joining a sorority.

You're completely right about everything. You'll find everything you said you wanted in whatever sorority you join, and you'll find a few catty, shallow girls who will judge you based on your image in every (yes, every) house. In my experience, the former definitely outweighs the latter. Sororities here are so big here that you'll be able to surround yourself with girls you like and have a great time. I really hope you rush!

Even if it goes poorly, which it probably won't (I wouldn't say sophomores are at much of a disadvantage at all compared to freshman, really), just do it. Coming from someone who only got invited back to six houses and then got cut, it's better than always wondering. My self-esteem was pretty wounded from getting kicked to the curb by several thousand of my peers while I watched my fellow juniors get into great houses. But time can heal something like that. In my head, I really do know my value is not measured by however these women chose to measure me (weight, age, who knows), and eventually my emotions will catch up. But if you want to rush, and you don't rush while you have the chance because you're afraid, you will always wonder, and that's so much worse than potential temporary hurt.
