caution...

by: PSA

I just graduated this spring and know so many girls who graduated as well, but with absolutely no job or graduate school prospects. In other words, they're sweating BIG TIME. I was in my sorority for three years and although I had fun, I also sacrificed a lot of time and money to be a part of it. Fortunately, my parents were able to pay for it but for those who couldn't do it this way, they ended up with a ton of student loans and nothing to show for it because they were too busy partying their way through college.

Some of these girls just planned on getting their MRS degree and failed. Some were too busy going to socials and updating their instagrams to find internships and develop skill sets. Either way, it's now THEIR problem and they have no future prospects. I'm not trying to call these people out and make them feel bad, just trying to say... WAKE UP PEOPLE. Rankings and glitter signs and big/little reveals will no longer be your sole worries before you know it.

Please focus on school and make sure you are creating a bright future for yourself after graduation! Fun is good too, but you need to make your education a priority always because I just feel so sad for my friends who are in the position they are in now. Your "friends for life" from your sorority will usually only equate to 2 or 3 girls in the long run anyway, so make sure to put enough effort into your schooling.

Rant over!

Also want to add that greek life is much higher at UF than many other schools... About $2,000 (give or take a little) per semester. Make sure that it's fiscally responsible for you to be joining or continuing in your organization.

I really appreciate this post. I am on a full ride and always get money back but honestly my parents do not give me a dime for school and I am questioning whether I should join or not. I am beyond social and my career is not beyond hard but I have always been into my studying and I like to save up money. Do you have anymore insight information or recommendations

The only advice I can give you in your case it to ask around about the true costs of each sorority during rush, but only if it REALLY interests you, because there are other ways to be social. Once you find that out, try to plot out the costs and see if you can do it.

Just know that if you join, you're not going to be able to put money away by working. ALL of that money will go toward dues and fees. In addition, your time will almost fully be consumed with working, greek life, and studying - nothing else. Just make sure it's what you want before investing the time and money.

would you do it again if you knew what you know now back then?

I don't know, it was fun but I'm just way past that part of my life now. It's really not "sisterhood forever <333" because you end up forgetting about most of these girls in the end... Not to be a downer but it's true. I did like it though! It would not be worth it if my parents didn't have disposable income though.

I agree with a lot of the points made in this post and Greek life can be expensive, but as far as securing internships or getting involved on campus, my chapter has been invaluable in helping me to do so. Greek life is what you make it, and I know people who waste their time partying in college who are unaffiliated, so it's up to you to make the most of it either way.

To thankyou - I don't mean this in an anti-greek way, but I had the exact situation as you and had considered going greek as well! I ultimately did not, and in hindsight I feel like I ended up in the best position for me and have no regrets! I made plenty of friends at UF with common interests through other involvement, and I saved THOUSANDS of dollars which is such a great feeling whenever I look at my savings account and realize I have a nice little start to my post-grad life ;) so think carefully on both sides, and as the OP pointed out - don't get distracted by all the "sparkle" of greek life. All that glitters isn't gold

Living in a chapter house can save TONS of money over the alternatives. I was worried about finances and yes, first year dues are no joke, but after that, between meal plan and housing costs, it is cheaper to be a member than not in many cases...
