Longwood University - LU Overview

  About Greek Life at LU

Longwood University is a small public liberal arts school in Farmville, Virginia, and the Greek system there is a genuine part of campus culture — not just a side thing. For a school this size, there's a solid mix of councils represented, including IFC fraternities, Panhellenic sororities, and NPHC organizations. That means you've got everything from historically Black fraternities and sororities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta to more traditional IFC chapters like Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and Theta Chi, plus a full slate of Panhellenic sororities including Zeta Tau Alpha, Kappa Delta, and Sigma Sigma Sigma, among others.

Because Longwood is a smaller school, Greek life tends to feel a lot more personal than it would at a big state university. You're not lost in a crowd of thousands during recruitment — chapters actually get to know you. Panhellenic formal recruitment runs in the fall and follows a structured process, while IFC chapters tend to do more informal recruitment throughout the year. NPHC organizations operate on their own intake timelines, which are separate from the traditional rush process entirely.

Longwood doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street. Most chapters operate through on-campus spaces and university-affiliated facilities rather than private houses, which keeps the social scene more spread across campus rather than concentrated in one spot. Events, mixers, and philanthropy efforts tend to happen in shared campus spaces.

Philanthropy is a pretty big deal across chapters here. Panhellenic and IFC orgs regularly host fundraising events tied to their national causes, and that culture of community involvement fits well with Longwood's broader identity as a school that emphasizes civic engagement and leadership. NPHC organizations are also active in community service and step culture, with probate shows drawing attention on campus when new members cross.

Greek life at Longwood isn't the only social outlet on campus, but for students who join, it tends to be a central part of their college experience. The smaller scale means tighter bonds within chapters and more overlap between organizations socially.
