Kettering University - KU Overview

  About Greek Life at KU

Kettering University is a small, co-op focused engineering and sciences school in Flint, Michigan, and the Greek system there reflects the tight-knit, work-hard culture of the campus. It's not a traditional residential university experience, and that shapes everything about how Greek life functions here.

The system includes IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities, as well as NPHC organizations, giving the community a broader range of chapters than you might expect for a school this size. Fraternities outnumber sororities pretty significantly, which tracks with Kettering's historically male-heavy student population in engineering fields. Chapters like Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Delta Tau Delta, and Pi Kappa Alpha are among the IFC names on campus, while Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, and Alpha Sigma Alpha represent Panhellenic. NPHC has a presence through organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Delta Sigma Theta, among others.

One thing to understand about Kettering is the co-op schedule. Students alternate between academic terms on campus and work terms off campus, which means chapter membership is constantly rotating in and out. It creates a different rhythm than a typical semester school — Greek organizations here have to work harder to maintain continuity and keep things running when half the chapter might be off doing an internship in another state.

Fraternity houses exist and serve as social hubs, which matters a lot at a school that doesn't have a sprawling residential campus culture otherwise. Because the school is smaller and the Greek community is relatively intimate, individual chapters tend to be close-knit. Philanthropy and social events happen throughout the year, and Greek organizations are a meaningful part of the social fabric for members, even if the Greek percentage of the student body isn't enormous.

Recruitment happens each term, and the co-op structure means there are multiple entry points throughout the year rather than just one big fall rush cycle like you'd see at larger schools.
