Advice from an Oldie👵

by: Alum

Here’s some advice from an oldie who was in a sorority here and was on both the sister side and the Panhellenic side!

1. Don’t choose a sorority based on followers or “top tier” status, choose the one where you feel most comfortable and see yourself happy for the next four years. A sorority may look great on socials and be considered by other members of Greek life as “top tier” but struggle with sisterhood, grades, or involvement, so focus on what fits you best. While a sorority may be “top tier” one year they could drop the next! Sorority reviews and rankings on here are often biased, so trust your own experience and judgment.

2. Don’t be scared and just go through recruitment! As someone who has helped with COB and was a Pi Chi, there are so many girls I’ve talked to who have regretted not going through the recruitment process the first time around. If you’re on the fence of going through just sign up, go to the first day and if you don’t like it, you can drop the process. By not signing up now and waiting a year or waiting for the COB process to get the sorority you want (which btw isn’t guaranteed to happen) you’re missing out on so many good memories with such great girls in these orgs!!

3. Know what you’re signing up for!!! Sororities aren’t just fun and parties, they require commitment and can be expensive. You’ll be expected to attend events, recruitment practices, sisterhood activities, chapter meetings, and a lot more for around four years. Also, a lot of the time when you don’t show up, you get fined out the ass!! If you’re not ready for the responsibility, don’t potentially take the spot of someone who truly wants it!

4. To Drop or Not to Drop!! If you get dropped by the sororities you wanted, don’t feel bad about wanting to drop the process all together. I always recommend sticking it out until bid day, but if you know you won’t give your energy or 100% to a certain sorority, it’s okay to drop the process. If you do make it to bid day and end up with your second choice, at least attend the bid day events before deciding to drop, it’s a more respectful way to handle it!

5. Just because you don’t look like the “cookie cutter” sorority girl doesn’t mean you don’t belong!!! What I loved most about my sorority was how different and unique everyone truly was, even if they looked similar on the outside. You might think you won’t fit in, but you could end up being their next president because of how much they love you!
