Kean University - KU Overview

  About Greek Life at KU

Kean University is a public school in Union, New Jersey, drawing a largely commuter-based student population from across the state. The Greek system here reflects that commuter culture — it's a smaller, more intimate scene compared to big residential campuses, but there's still a real presence across multiple councils.

The organizations at Kean span several governing bodies. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) has a solid footprint here, with chapters including Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta on the fraternity side, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta representing the sororities. Beyond NPHC, there are also Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) organizations like Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Lambda Theta Phi, Sigma Lambda Beta, and Mu Sigma Upsilon, which have historically had strong roots at schools with diverse student bodies like Kean. There are also IFC and Panhellenic-affiliated chapters, including Tau Kappa Epsilon, Alpha Delta Gamma, Delta Phi Epsilon, and Theta Phi Alpha.

Because Kean doesn't have a traditional on-campus Greek row, chapters don't operate out of dedicated chapter houses the way you'd see at a large state school. Recruitment and intake processes tend to happen through campus events, info tables, and social media outreach rather than structured house tours or formal rush weeks with massive turnout.

Greek life here is more of a niche part of campus culture than a dominant social force. That said, chapters are active in community service and step shows, and NPHC organizations in particular tend to be well-recognized on campus. The multicultural fraternities and sororities also put on events and fundraisers that draw broader student interest beyond just their own members.

If you're coming in expecting a huge Greek scene, Kean isn't that. But for students who do go Greek here, membership tends to be a pretty meaningful part of their college experience given how tight-knit the chapters are.
