Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute - RPI Overview

  About Greek Life at RPI

RPI is a pretty intense technical school in Troy, New York, and the Greek system here is a real part of how students build their social lives outside the lab and the lecture hall. With a student body that skews heavily toward engineering and science, Greek organizations give a lot of people a way to decompress, find a crew, and get involved beyond academics.

The IFC covers the bulk of the fraternities on campus, and there's a solid lineup of nationally recognized chapters represented — Alpha Epsilon Pi, Sigma Chi, Phi Gamma Delta, Theta Chi, Sigma Phi Epsilon, and plenty of others. NPHC chapters including Alpha Phi Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi also have a presence on campus, as does Phi Iota Alpha, which falls under multicultural Greek council affiliations. On the sorority side, the Panhellenic community is smaller — Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Phi, Pi Beta Phi, and Alpha Omega Epsilon (a co-ed engineering sorority) round out most of the women's options. It's a compact Panhellenic scene, so women going through recruitment should know that going in.

Rush at RPI tends to be pretty low-key compared to big state schools. It's not the week-long formal production you'd see at a large SEC campus. Fraternities do a mix of formal and informal recruitment, and a lot of bids come through getting to know guys at events, hanging out at houses, and just spending time around a chapter organically. It's a more relaxed process overall.

Housing is a real part of the RPI Greek experience. Many of the fraternities own or lease chapter houses, and some of them are located on or near the hill above campus. Living in a house is a significant draw for a lot of members, especially upperclassmen looking to get out of the dorms or on-campus apartments.

Greek chapters at RPI also participate in philanthropy events throughout the year, and inter-Greek programming is fairly common. Given the school's size and academic intensity, Greek life occupies a meaningful but not all-consuming role in campus culture — it's one of the more prominent social structures available, alongside clubs, sports, and student government.
