Iona College - IC Overview

  About Greek Life at IC

Iona University is a small Catholic school in New Rochelle, New York, sitting just north of New York City in Westchester County. It's a commuter-heavy campus with a tight-knit feel, and the Greek system here reflects that — it's a smaller, more intimate setup compared to what you'd find at a large state school.

The active organizations on campus include Delta Upsilon and Pi Kappa Phi on the fraternity side, Phi Beta Sigma representing the NPHC, and Phi Sigma Sigma as the sole active sorority. That means IFC, NPHC, and Panhellenic are all technically represented, though the overall footprint is compact. Don't come in expecting a massive Greek Row situation — that's just not what Iona is.

Because the school pulls a lot of commuter students and has a strong local New York metro identity, Greek life here tends to operate more as a community within the broader campus social scene rather than dominating it. Students get involved for the brotherhood, sisterhood, and service components rather than because Greek life is the default social hub on campus.

Recruitment is generally low-key compared to big state schools. There's no sprawling formal rush week with thousands of students moving between mansion-sized chapter houses. Chapters here recruit on a more personal level, and the process tends to feel more conversational than performative. Housing through chapters isn't really part of the picture at Iona the way it is at residential Greek-heavy campuses.

Philanthropy and community service tend to be a real part of what keeps these chapters active and visible on campus. National organizations like Pi Kappa Phi and Phi Sigma Sigma both carry strong service traditions tied to their national platforms, and that carries over locally at Iona.

The NPHC presence through Phi Beta Sigma adds a different dimension to the Greek community here — Divine Nine organizations operate on their own intake process and have a distinct culture and history that runs separate from IFC and Panhellenic structures.

Overall, this is the kind of Greek community where you're going to know the people in your chapter well, and your chapter is going to be genuinely visible on a campus this size.
