Indiana University of Pennsylvania - IUP Overview

  About Greek Life at IUP

IUP sits in Indiana, Pennsylvania — a small college town where the university is basically the entire town — and that setting shapes how social life works here. With a student body in the mid-to-upper tens of thousands, the school is big enough to support a real Greek system but compact enough that chapters actually know each other.

The Greek community at IUP is organized across a few governing councils. The Interfraternity Council oversees the traditionally white fraternities, and Panhellenic covers the sorority side. The National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters are also active on campus, representing historically Black fraternities and sororities. That mix of IFC, Panhellenic, and NPHC organizations gives the system some range in terms of what different chapters offer and who they serve.

On the fraternity side you've got chapters like Kappa Sigma, Sigma Chi, Phi Kappa Tau, Theta Chi, Phi Delta Theta, and others. Sororities include Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Gamma, Zeta Tau Alpha, Delta Zeta, Sigma Kappa, and more. The NPHC presence includes well-known names like Alpha Kappa Alpha, Omega Psi Phi, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho, among others. It's a solid lineup across the board.

IUP doesn't have the kind of massive Greek Row you'd see at a flagship state school, but chapters do have houses and meeting spaces around campus. Greek life is a visible part of the social scene, especially in a town where off-campus options are limited. Philanthropy events, socials, and campus involvement keep chapters active throughout the year.

Rush and recruitment follow pretty standard timelines — formal Panhellenic recruitment in the fall, IFC recruitment running on its own schedule, and NPHC intake processes that operate differently from the open recruitment model. If you want to get a feel for things before committing, there's usually enough going on early in the school year to get a sense of each chapter's vibe.

Overall, this is a Greek system that's woven into campus life without completely dominating it. It's an active community, particularly for a school of IUP's size in a town where the university is the main event.
