Howard University - HU Overview

  About Greek Life at HU

Howard University is one of the most prominent HBCUs in the country, and that identity shapes everything about how Greek life works on campus — including how seriously people take it. The chapters here are affiliated with the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), commonly known as the Divine Nine, along with a medical fraternity and an engineering sorority rounding out the mix. That means you're not dealing with IFC or traditional Panhellenic structures here. It's a different model, and it runs differently than what you might be used to seeing at big state schools.

The NPHC organizations active on campus include Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, along with Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta as sororities. Phi Delta Epsilon, the medical fraternity, and Phi Sigma Rho, an engineering sorority, also have a presence. It's a focused group of organizations rather than a sprawling system with dozens of chapters.

Intake — that's the NPHC term for what other schools call rush or recruitment — is selective and interest-based. You typically have to meet GPA requirements, complete a period of interest, and go through a formal membership process. It's not the same as open recruitment weekends you'd see at schools with big Panhellenic systems. Chapters here take membership seriously, and the process reflects that.

On campus, Greek-affiliated students are visible and active. Step shows are a big part of the culture — NPHC chapters are known for stepping and strolling, and those performances show up at campus events throughout the year. Community service and civic engagement are also deeply tied to how these organizations operate, which fits Howard's broader culture of social responsibility and activism.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row with chapter houses lined up near campus. NPHC chapters generally don't operate out of dedicated housing the way IFC fraternities do at other schools. Members are spread across campus and the surrounding D.C. area. That said, being in Washington, D.C. gives these organizations access to a city that's deeply connected to the alumni networks and professional legacies tied to NPHC membership.
