I had a general sense it involved two chapters in the same room, probably some kind of theme, probably a lot of noise. But the actual mechanics of it - what it was supposed to be, what it felt like to be new to it, what the point even was - I had no idea. And I don't think most people outside Greek life do either.

Willamette University put out a story about their Fraternity and Sorority Life program, and honestly it reads like the kind of thing Panhellenic councils across the country wish they could say about themselves without flinching. Scholarship. Service. Friendship. The trifecta. Easy to slap on a brochure, harder to actually build. But from what the story describes, Willamette seems to be doing something that a lot of bigger programs have completely lost track of.

Every chapter has that one mixer theme they'll talk about for years. The one where everything clicked - the costumes were creative, the energy was there, and nobody ended up on a ladder trying to fix something at the last minute. And then every chapter also has the theme that someone pitched with full confidence in a meeting, got voted in, and slowly revealed itself to be a disaster of planning and coordination. I've been to both kinds. More of the second kind than I'd like to admit.
