Hofstra University - HU Overview

  About Greek Life at HU

Hofstra University sits on Long Island, just outside New York City, and its Greek system reflects the kind of mid-size private school culture you'd expect from a campus that's close enough to the city to feel its pull but insular enough to have its own social scene. The system isn't enormous, but it's genuinely active, with a solid number of fraternities operating under the Interfraternity Council and sororities under Panhellenic.

The chapter list covers a pretty broad range — you've got well-known nationals like Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Alpha Phi, Delta Gamma, and Delta Phi Epsilon, plus some you might not have heard of before like Tau Epsilon Phi and Alpha Theta Beta. There's also a professional co-ed business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, which draws members who want the brotherhood or sisterhood experience tied more directly to career networking.

Rush and recruitment at Hofstra tend to follow the standard IFC and Panhellenic formats — formal recruitment for sororities in the fall, and a more informal process on the fraternity side. Because the school isn't a huge state university, the process can feel more personal and less overwhelming than what you'd find at a flagship campus.

One thing to know going in: Hofstra doesn't have a traditional Greek Row with chapter-owned houses. Most chapters operate out of on-campus suites or designated spaces rather than standalone houses. That shapes the social dynamic a bit — parties and events tend to happen in those spaces or at off-campus venues rather than at a row of fraternity houses.

Greek organizations here do put real emphasis on philanthropy and campus involvement. Chapters regularly run fundraising events tied to their national organizations' causes, and Greek life tends to intersect with other campus activities in ways that keep it visible even to students who aren't members. It's a meaningful part of campus social life, though Hofstra's proximity to New York City means there's always competition for attention from everything else the area has to offer.
