North Carolina Central University - NCCU Overview

  About Greek Life at NCCU

NCCU is a historically Black university in Durham, North Carolina, and its Greek system reflects that heritage directly. All of the fraternities and sororities here come from the National Pan-Hellenic Council — the nine organizations historically known as the "Divine Nine." There's no IFC or Panhellenic presence on campus. This is an NPHC school through and through.

The chapters currently active on campus include Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, and Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta representing on the sorority side. It's a smaller Greek community in terms of the number of chapters, but each of these organizations carries a lot of weight — both nationally and on campus.

If you're coming from a predominantly white institution background, the intake process here works differently than what you might picture as "rush." NPHC chapters don't run the same open recruitment events you see at IFC or Panhellenic schools. Membership is typically by invitation after a demonstrated period of interest, academic achievement, and campus involvement. It's more selective and slower-moving than a traditional two-week rush.

On campus, Greek-lettered organizations are a real presence at events, step shows, and community service initiatives. Step shows in particular are a big deal in NPHC culture, and NCCU is no different. Chapters are visible at major campus events and often lead service and civic engagement efforts both on campus and in the broader Durham community.

Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses — that's not how most NPHC chapters operate, here or at most HBCUs. Chapter life centers around campus activities, yard culture, and community events rather than residential housing. The yard — meaning the open common spaces on campus — is where a lot of Greek visibility happens, especially during Yard Show season.
