North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University - NCAT Overview

  About Greek Life at NCAT

North Carolina A&T is a historically Black university in Greensboro with a student body in the tens of thousands, and the Greek system here is deeply tied to that HBCU identity. The organizations on campus are primarily from the National Pan-Hellenic Council — what most people call the Divine Nine — and that's really the heart of Greek life at A&T.

The NPHC fraternities represented here include Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma. On the sorority side, you've got Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Sigma Gamma Rho, and Zeta Phi Beta. Lambda Chi Alpha also has a presence on campus, which gives the IFC a foothold, though NPHC orgs are clearly the dominant culture here.

NPHC intake and membership processes work differently than traditional IFC or Panhellenic rush. There's no formal recruitment week where you go chapter-to-booth in a gymnasium. Instead, you typically need to be enrolled for a certain number of semesters, meet GPA requirements, and express interest through more structured, chapter-run intake processes. It's a slower and more selective path than what you'd see at a predominantly white institution, so if you're interested, do your homework early and keep your grades up.

On a campus with A&T's culture, NPHC chapters are genuinely visible. Stepping events, probate shows, and yard activities are real parts of campus social life — not just for members, but for the broader student body. Probate season in particular draws big crowds. These organizations also have strong ties to community service and their national programs, which tends to be a bigger emphasis here than at schools where Greek life is more party-focused.

Don't expect a Greek Row with chapter houses lining a street. Most NPHC chapters at HBCUs, including A&T, operate without dedicated housing, which is pretty standard across the country for these organizations. That doesn't make them any less active — it just means chapter life plays out on the yard, in campus spaces, and at off-campus events rather than from a house address.
