Being a northern girl, how likely is it that I'd receive a bid to ANY sorority WITHOUT recommendations?

I don't think recommendations matter at all really. If the organization likes you then recommendations are a plus and if they don't like you then a recommendation isn't going to save you. Most sororities have girls from all over the country so being from the north won't hurt you that much if you have a good personality and have good conversations during recruitment.

Some organizations require one to give a girl a bid, so it definitely doesn't hurt to get them unless you have some horrible reputation problem you don't want anyone here to know about. In my org they help you get past the first round but I know others need them.
