Central Michigan University - CMU Overview

  About Greek Life at CMU

Central Michigan University sits in Mount Pleasant — a mid-size college town in the Lower Peninsula — and its Greek system is a pretty solid piece of the overall campus social fabric. CMU enrolls around 15,000 undergrads, and while this isn't a Big Ten school where Greek life dominates every weekend, the system here is active enough that you'll definitely notice it if you spend any time on campus.

The fraternity side is governed by the Interfraternity Council, with chapters like Beta Theta Pi, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Tau Kappa Epsilon, Kappa Sigma, and several others making up a double-digit roster. On the sorority side, Panhellenic oversees a comparable group of chapters including Zeta Tau Alpha, Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Sigma Kappa, and more. Together, the two councils cover a pretty full spread of national organizations.

Recruitment happens in the fall, and it follows the format you'd expect from a school this size — IFC rush tends to be more informal and spread out over a few weeks, while Panhellenic formal recruitment is a more structured process with rounds and preference events. Neither is as intense as what you'd see at a larger SEC or Big 12 school, but chapters here are genuinely active and take their new member processes seriously.

Philanthropy is a real part of the culture. Most chapters run their own events throughout the year — think fundraising weeks, philanthropy tournaments, and community service partnerships — and there's decent cross-chapter participation when those events come around. It's not just something chapters do on paper.

Housing is part of the picture too. Several chapters have houses either on or near campus, which gives those organizations a physical presence that helps anchor their social calendars and new member recruitment. Not every chapter has a house, but enough do that Greek Row has an actual feel to it.

Overall, the system here is on the smaller side compared to major flagship universities, but the chapters that are here are established and connected to the broader CMU experience. There's a real community tied to the Chippewas identity, and Greek organizations tend to reflect that same kind of school pride.
