Hampton University - HU Overview

  About Greek Life at HU

Hampton University is an HBCU in Hampton, Virginia, and the Greek system there reflects what you'd expect from a historically Black university — it's built almost entirely around the Divine Nine. All the organizations on campus are part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC), which means there's no IFC or traditional Panhellenic structure here. That's pretty standard for HBCUs, and it shapes the whole culture around how fraternities and sororities operate.

The chapters present include Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, and Phi Beta Sigma on the fraternity side, with Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Zeta Phi Beta representing the sororities. These are some of the most recognized names in Black Greek-letter history, and at HU specifically, they carry a lot of weight on campus.

NPHC intake is different from the open rush you'd see at schools with IFC or Panhellenic chapters. It's more selective and structured, often requiring a certain GPA and a set number of completed college credit hours before you're even eligible. The process isn't advertised the same way — you're not going to walk into a house and grab a bid. It takes time, and most people don't go through it until sophomore year or later.

On campus, Greek presence shows up mostly through step shows, strolling, community service events, and yard culture. Greeks at HBCUs tend to perform and represent publicly in ways that feel distinct from the house-party-heavy culture at bigger PWI systems. Probate shows — when new members are revealed — are a big deal and draw serious crowds. Chapter housing isn't really part of the model here; most NPHC orgs at HBCUs operate without dedicated chapter houses, and Hampton is no different. The yard is where you see and feel the culture, not a Greek Row.

The Greek community at HU is on the smaller side in terms of total chapters, but the organizations that are active have deep roots both on campus and nationally. Membership in these organizations often carries meaning well beyond the college years, with strong alumni networks that stay connected long after graduation.
