Butler University - BU Overview

  About Greek Life at BU

Butler is a mid-size private university in Indianapolis, and its Greek system is a genuinely central part of campus social life. With a total undergraduate enrollment that hovers around 5,000, the Greek community here isn't massive by Big Ten standards, but it carries real weight on campus. A solid portion of undergrads go Greek, and the organizations that are here tend to be active and visible.

On the fraternity side, IFC oversees chapters including Delta Tau Delta, Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, and Beta Theta Pi. Panhellenic covers the sorority side, which includes Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi. There's no NPHC or MGC presence listed at Butler currently, so the Greek system here operates primarily through those two councils.

Recruitment at a school this size tends to feel more personal than what you'd find at a large state school. Panhellenic formal recruitment runs in the fall and follows a structured round system. Fraternity recruitment is a bit more informal, though IFC chapters still run organized events. Because the school is smaller, word travels fast and people often come in already knowing members through class, athletics, or dorms.

Butler's campus is in a residential neighborhood on the north side of Indianapolis, and chapters generally have houses or designated chapter facilities in that area. The Greek houses aren't isolated on some remote row — they're woven into the broader residential fabric of campus, which contributes to how connected Greek life feels to everyday student life.

Philanthropy is a real part of the culture here. Chapters regularly host events tied to their national philanthropies, and those events draw participation from across campus, not just from Greek members. Butler also has a strong tradition around Homecoming and other campus-wide events where Greek organizations tend to be heavily involved. The school's identity is closely tied to things like Butler Basketball, and Greek chapters often organize around big games and campus traditions.

Overall, this is a system where being in a chapter puts you close to the center of social activity on campus, partly because the school itself is small enough that communities overlap constantly.
