Brooklyn College - BC Overview

  About Greek Life at BC

Brooklyn College is a commuter-heavy CUNY school in the Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn, and that context shapes just about everything you need to know about its Greek scene. Without on-campus housing for most students, the whole college experience here works differently than it does at a traditional residential university — and Greek life reflects that.

The system is on the smaller side, with a handful of fraternities and sororities operating on campus. On the fraternity side, you've got Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha Phi Delta, Phi Beta Sigma, and Zeta Beta Tau. Sororities include Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Xi Delta, and Theta Phi Gamma. That covers both IFC and Panhellenic organizations, along with NPHC representation through Phi Beta Sigma.

Don't expect Greek Row or chapter houses here — that's just not how it works at a commuter school in New York City. Chapters hold their events, meetings, and recruitment activities on campus or at off-campus venues around Brooklyn. Recruitment tends to be more informal and relationship-driven compared to the structured rush weeks you'd see at a big state school in the South or Midwest.

Greek life is more of a niche part of campus culture at BC than a defining one. The school draws from all five boroughs and beyond, and a lot of students are balancing coursework with jobs, family, and long commutes. That said, the chapters that are here are genuinely active — members get involved in philanthropy events, campus programming, and community service, which tends to be a real focus for organizations in this kind of urban, commuter environment.

If you're coming from a high school where you imagined college Greek life as something out of a Hollywood movie, BC will give you a different version of it — more grounded in the city itself, and more integrated into the day-to-day rhythms of a student body that's deeply connected to Brooklyn and New York as a whole.
