Brandeis University - BU Overview

  About Greek Life at BU

Brandeis University is a small, private research university just outside Boston in Waltham, Massachusetts, and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus scale. The school has a handful of active fraternities operating under IFC and several sororities under Panhellenic, giving students options across both sides without the sprawling, house-lined Greek Row you'd find at a large state school.

One thing to know upfront: Brandeis has a strong Jewish cultural identity, which shapes a lot of campus life, and that carries into Greek life too. Organizations like Zeta Beta Tau, Alpha Epsilon Pi, and Sigma Alpha Mu have historically had a presence on campuses with strong Jewish communities, and Brandeis is no exception. That said, Greek life here isn't exclusive or identity-locked — chapters are open and recruitment is generally pretty low-key compared to the intense, structured rush processes you'd see at bigger schools in the South or Midwest.

Housing is pretty minimal. Most chapters don't have dedicated houses the way fraternities and sororities do at larger universities. Social events tend to happen on campus or in rented spaces, which keeps things a bit more integrated with the broader student body rather than siloed off into Greek-only spaces.

Greek life at Brandeis is more of a niche part of campus culture than a defining one. The school skews heavily toward academics, research, and social justice activism, and those things tend to drive campus culture more than Greek organizations do. That doesn't mean the chapters aren't active — philanthropy events, social functions, and community service are all part of how chapters operate here — but you're not going to feel like you're missing out on the core Brandeis experience if you're not involved in a chapter.

The community is smaller and more close-knit than what you'd find at a flagship state school, which means members often have tighter bonds within their chapters. There's also a co-ed and multicultural organization presence that rounds out the options beyond traditional IFC and Panhellenic groups.
