Furman University - FU Overview

  About Greek Life at FU

Tucked in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Furman is a small private liberal arts school in Greenville, South Carolina — and its Greek system reflects that intimate campus feel. With a student body of around 2,800 undergrads, Furman's Greek community is smaller in raw numbers but still plays a noticeable role in campus social life.

On the fraternity side, IFC oversees chapters including Beta Theta Pi, Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Phi, Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Kappa Sigma, and Tau Kappa Epsilon. Panhellenic sororities include Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Kappa Delta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Zeta Tau Alpha. Alpha Kappa Alpha represents NPHC on campus as well, giving the system some additional range beyond the traditional IFC and Panhellenic structure.

Recruitment at Furman follows a fairly standard formal rush calendar. Panhellenic recruitment is structured, with rounds that narrow down to bid day over the course of about a week. Fraternity recruitment tends to be a bit more informal but still organized through IFC. Because the school is small, the process can feel more personal than at a large state school — you're often running into the same people in class before you've even officially gone through rush.

Greek life at Furman doesn't dominate the social scene the way it might at a flagship state university, but it's a consistent presence. On a small residential campus where a lot of students stay on or near campus on weekends, chapters tend to be one of the main social hubs, especially for freshmen getting their footing. Philanthropy is a real part of the culture — sororities in particular take their national philanthropies seriously, and chapters regularly host campus-wide events tied to fundraising and service.

Housing works a little differently here than at schools with full fraternity row setups. Furman has lodge-style houses on campus for some chapters, which serve as gathering spaces rather than full residential houses. Most students live in the university's residential system, so Greek housing isn't the defining feature of membership the way it might be elsewhere. That said, the lodges are central to chapter identity and where a lot of the social activity actually happens.
