Emory University - EU Overview

  About Greek Life at EU

Emory is a mid-size private research university in Atlanta, and its Greek system reflects the school's academic intensity while still being a real part of campus social life. It's not a football school, so the Greek scene isn't built around tailgates and stadium-adjacent row houses the way it is at big SEC publics down the road. But that doesn't mean it's low-key — chapters here are active, recruitment draws serious interest every year, and for a lot of students, going Greek ends up being one of the defining parts of their Emory experience.

The system is organized across a few councils. IFC covers the men's fraternities, and Panhellenic covers the women's sororities. NPHC is also represented on campus through historically Black organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta, which have deep roots in the broader Atlanta community. Altogether, there are a solid number of chapters across these councils, giving students a range of options when they're figuring out where they fit.

Recruitment for IFC chapters tends to be more informal and rolled out across the fall semester, while Panhellenic runs a structured formal recruitment process. Neither process is quite as high-stakes or publicly visible as what you'd see at a massive state school, but that's partly just the Emory context — the student body skews pre-med, pre-law, and academically driven, and Greek life exists alongside that rather than overshadowing it.

One thing to know about the housing situation: Emory chapters generally don't have the big standalone houses or a defined Greek Row that you see at larger schools. Most chapter activity happens through rented spaces, on-campus chapter rooms, or off-campus houses, which gives the whole scene a slightly different feel than what you might picture from a traditional Greek experience.

Philanthropy and community service are genuinely woven into how chapters operate here. Emory has a strong culture of civic engagement, and Greek organizations tend to reflect that through fundraising events and partnerships with Atlanta-area nonprofits. Social events happen, especially around Homecoming and through inter-chapter collaborations, but community involvement is consistently a visible part of how chapters present themselves on campus.
