Eastern Michigan University - EMU Overview

  About Greek Life at EMU

Eastern Michigan University sits just a few miles from Ann Arbor, and while it doesn't have the massive Greek scene of its Big Ten neighbor, it has a solid system with a real mix of organizations across multiple councils. EMU is a mid-size public university with a student body that's commuter-heavy, which shapes how Greek life fits into campus culture overall.

The fraternities fall under the Interfraternity Council, and the sororities are governed by Panhellenic. On top of that, EMU has a strong National Pan-Hellenic Council presence, with most of the Divine Nine organizations represented on campus — Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Phi Beta Sigma, and Iota Phi Theta all have chapters here. That NPHC presence is a meaningful part of what makes EMU's Greek community feel well-rounded.

Because EMU has a lot of commuter students, Greek life is more of a niche thing than a campus-defining social scene. It's not the kind of school where Greek Row dominates the weekend or where the majority of your social life runs through a chapter. That said, the organizations that are here tend to be active and community-focused. Philanthropy events, step shows, and campus service projects are pretty consistent parts of what chapters do throughout the year.

Housing varies by chapter — some of the IFC fraternities have houses in the area, but not every organization has a dedicated chapter house. NPHC chapters typically don't have houses, which is standard nationally for those organizations. Recruitment for IFC and Panhellenic chapters follows a more traditional rush format, while NPHC chapters use an intake process that runs on its own timeline and structure.

Overall, it's a smaller Greek community relative to the size of the university, but the range of councils and organizations means there's genuine variety in what membership looks like from one chapter to the next.
