sorority chances?

by: FSUNOLEZ

Okay I really want to rush but I'm having second thoughts because of the way I look. I'm very tall and very overweight.. but I'm very well groomed and take pride in my personality and the way I dress, even though I'm not a typical skinny girl. I'm afraid that my weight will be the difference between me getting into a house or not. Do many sororities take weight into consideration?

Don't let your weight stop you from rushing! Yeah like I think theyll consider appearance, but I think it's more about if you would represent them well so if take care of yourself and take pride in your appearance then it's nothing to worry about...besides if a chapter would not invite you back only because of your weight that's stupid

Yes it will affect your rush, but will by no means keep you from getting into a sorority. If you're well groomed they care more about that. But I can't lie and tell you it won't be considered

But I don't think thats a reason not to rush, you should still do it. But don't go in with your heart set on a specific sorority (that goes for anyone). Just have to be prepared to have a bit thicker skin. Rush is hard for everyone though.

I don't want to be in a top tier sorority so I'm not too worried about my weight when it comes to getting into a sorority that is more popular. I want to be in one that accepts my weight, but i was just wondering if my weight would totally affect me getting into any sorority at all.

There are overweight girls in sororities? The websites don't reflect this. I'm in the same boat as the original poster.

there are heavier girls in sororities, although not very many in the "upper" ones. Most sororities wouldn't put up many pictures with them for rush though so it won't be reflected.

Unfortunately it will def hurt your chances in all houses. Being honest with you, very few if any house will extend you a bid.
I am sure you are a nice person but sororities are superfluous organizations in general whether they admit it or not.

If you have your heart set on joining I would wait until next year and perhaps work on getting healthy. Save your self the heartache which is sure to come

Good luck

There are girls that are more than 10-15 pounds overweight. She could probably find a spot in gamma phi, kappa, sig delt, aopi, agd, dz if she has style, well groomed, and a good personality.

Okay honestly.. Yes I'm definitely over 15-20 pounds overweight but I'm also over 6 feet tall.. I mean I am well groomed and I dress like a preppy girl (Tory burch, jack Rogers, vineyard vines, ect)... But I keep myself healthy and I exercise very often. I am significantly overweight but I just didn't know if that would keep me from a spot in even one of the "lower" sororities?

Just so girls are aware. Lower sororities give out cuts too. Nothing is garunteed.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster!! I exercise frequently and I watch what I eat but i have type I diabetes (as well as the rest of my family) and the way my body reacts to my lifestyle makes it hard for me to lose weight and easy for me to gain weight, even when I'm making healthy choices. trust me, I've been spending the last 6 or so years trying to lose the weight that I've gained from my diabetes but it's just harder for me. I just don't want that to affect whether or not I get into a sorority or not is the thing, even though I am a lot bigger.

What I am telling you is 100% honest! Fsu has an exceptionally competitive rush, not only for top houses but for ALL houses.
It will crush your self esteem to go through and be rejected based on physical appesrance. Even our "lower " tier" houses are far better than most schools.
There are so many other great organizations available at fsu to become involved in don't subject yourself to this type of scrunity unless you have a very thick skin.
As far as eating disorders mentioned in earlier posts , yes it is very very common no matter the tier. Anyone that says different is oblivious to what is actually happening. Yes, not all surcome to the intense pressure but it is fairly common in all houses and in general at fSU where the female population is disportinally very attractive

lol and where do you find all this wisdom from that you're the beacon of truth? Eating disorders happen, but they are not rampant in sororities like you make the out to be and it's not because i'm oblivious.

One more thought
Why not be honest with these girls and tell them the truth? Sororities are an awsome experience for some but clearly this girl recognizes her shortcomings in fitting in. Why in God's name would you tell her to rush at FSU ?
Let her experience her first year and explore other opportunities first then consider rushing winter or next fall?

lol you sound like I'm trying to actively cover something up. Out of everyone I've known in a sorority, two had eating disorders. It's a problem with college population in general of course, but it's not some epidemic that is related to sororities.

Why in gods name would you tell her not to rush? I've seen plenty of overweight girls in sororities at fsu. Yes rush is very competitive and the majority of girls are not overweight. Yes there is a chance she may not get in, but she already seems significantly aware of that. If she knows that going in, why not try? She could end up with a sisterhood this year. And if not, then she knows what shes getting into next year. As long as she has 3 sororities left by pref she will get into one.

What is overweight in the Greek world? What size in clothing?

by: Size Aug 4, 2015 9:16:41 AM

If I had to guess I would say most girls are smalls. 0-2
6/8 would be considered thick

I would say I'm a thicker girl currently in a sorority, size medium/8ish I work out every day though so I have a lot of muscle

0-2 is like petite build or eating disorder thin... Might be normal for younger, shorter 18 year old freshmen but for seniors or girls who are taller that's way too small. Even for the really skinny, fit girls in top tiers it's small. Superficial girls wouldn't want you if you were THAT thin because they want hot girls, not lanky boney ones.

So I bought a pair of 4's in Lilly shorts. I'm going to be considered thick? Wow! Shouldn't have developed cheerleader/gymnast legs.

I've cheered my whole life, and half a lot of muscle in my legs! does wearing a 4/6 mean I'll have no chance in a good sorority?

I beg you to not listen to some of these idiots and to give rushing a chance. if a sorority doesn't want you because of your weight, you don't want to be in that organization anyway. so rush and if it ever didn't work out or you didn't get any houses that you like, at least you tried. you can't sit back in fear of what other people thinking of you. i promise girls will care more about you confidence than your weight

Here is my question to the original poster....you said you are 'very tall and very overweight.' What is your definition of "very overweight"? If you are, let's say 75 pounds overweight, it is not going to be happening. Sometimes the truth hurts. If you are 20 pounds overweight, and that's what you're calling "very overweight", then it's a whole different story. No one is being mean here. People are being realistic.

Op, you have said you are considerably overweight and you are having doubts about rushing.
Yes it will affect and narrower your chances absolutely!
Are you comfortable with being judged on looks, personality academics ect?
If you are then fine, give it a try but know the process is not easy even for girls who fit the image.
Don't rush if you can't handle rejection

Simple as that
