Dear Pnm,
Please understand that philanthropy is ONE aspect of sorority life, but it is not the reason that sororities exist. Friendship, a home away from home in a new and important phase of life, a space for young women to find opportunities to excel in academics and leadership, a fun social life, and just a place to finish growing up, is what being in a sorority is all about. Yes, they all have philanthropies, but sororities do not exist for the sole purpose of fundraising for their worthy beneficiaries. That is one aspect and one aspect only. If your passion is doing this work then that is wonderful and you are not alone, but don't judge the quality of any sorority by a dollars-raised metric. That's not the purpose.

"SERVICE is listed as one of the primary purposes of joining"...no, it is not one of the 'purposes,' as you say, of joining and it is not in any of what you are calling 'mission statements'. I get what you are saying about what you read, and while raising funds for charity is a part of the membership's activities, and a participation requirement that is not optional, it is not why any of the sororities were founded, not the purpose for their existence now, or the purpose for joining. Supporting women is the one and only purpose of every single NPC sorority. That is a very necessary philanthropy in itself, and one that we need to desperately hold on to in these times. You might be interested that the designated charities of certain sororities change from time to time, and in fact there are some NPC sororities that only fundraise for their national foundations, which in turn contribute to different charitable causes. But XYZ sorority was never an offshoot to support ABC Charitable Foundation. Is it a good thing to do that benefits the members as well as a worthy cause? Yes it is that, but without the ACTUAL MISSION of supporting women, there is no sorority. If your expectations are that charitable work is the main purpose for joining, you are not quite on the page.

I simply asked about philanthropies since it’s a huge part from what I’ve been told the sororities focus on. All of these are great philanthropies. I was interested to see what they were and how much they raised. Apparently I hit a nerve.
