DePaul University - DPU Overview

  About Greek Life at DPU

DePaul is a large private university in the heart of Chicago, and its Greek system reflects the kind of urban campus culture you'd expect from a school where the city itself is the main attraction. Chapters here operate across both IFC and Panhellenic councils, with NPHC and Multicultural Greek Council organizations also represented — so the system covers a pretty broad range of Greek affiliations.

With around eleven fraternities and eleven sororities active on campus, it's a mid-sized system for a school of DePaul's enrollment. Greek life is genuinely present here, but it competes with everything Chicago has to offer, so it tends to function more as one part of campus social life rather than the defining center of it. That's pretty typical for urban commuter-heavy schools, and DePaul definitely fits that mold.

Don't expect a traditional Greek Row or chapter houses — that's not really how it works here. Most chapters operate without dedicated housing, which changes the feel of things. Events tend to happen at rented venues, on-campus spaces, or around the city rather than on some sprawling house-lined street. Recruitment is generally more low-key than what you'd see at a Big Ten school, and the process tends to be less intense because of that.

Chapters here put a real emphasis on philanthropy and community involvement, which fits DePaul's broader identity as a Vincentian Catholic university with a mission rooted in service. Organizations across all councils participate in fundraising events and volunteer initiatives throughout the year. The multicultural and NPHC chapters — including groups like Alpha Phi Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, and Sigma Gamma Rho — have strong presences and active programming that often draws wider campus attention.

The discussion and rating activity on this site shows that students are engaged enough with Greek life to talk about it, ask questions, and share their experiences. It's a system worth paying attention to, even if Chicago tends to steal the spotlight.
