University of Houston - UH Overview

  About Greek Life at UH

One of the largest universities in Texas, UH sits in the middle of a massive, diverse city, and its Greek system reflects that energy. With dozens of active chapters across multiple councils, there's a lot going on here if you know where to look.

The system is organized across several governing bodies. IFC oversees the bulk of the traditional men's fraternities, while Panhellenic covers the women's sororities. The NPHC — the National Pan-Hellenic Council — also has a real presence on campus, with historically Black fraternities and sororities like Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Omega Psi Phi, Alpha Kappa Alpha, and Delta Sigma Theta all represented. There's also a Multicultural Greek Council presence, with groups like Lambda Phi Epsilon, Delta Epsilon Psi, and Sigma Beta Rho rounding out the scene for students looking for culturally-focused organizations.

UH is a commuter-heavy school by nature. A significant chunk of the student body lives off campus and works part-time, so Greek life operates differently here than it might at a more traditional residential campus. It's not the kind of place where Greek Row dominates the social calendar for everyone. That said, for students who do go Greek, the involvement tends to run pretty deep. Chapters are active, they host events, they do philanthropy work, and they show up for each other.

On the housing side, most chapters don't have traditional live-in houses the way you'd see at some flagship state schools. There are chapter facilities and meeting spaces, but the full Greek Row experience isn't really the model here. Social life tends to happen through organized events, mixers, and campus programming rather than house parties on a designated street.

Rush and recruitment follow the standard format — IFC typically holds informal and formal recruitment in the fall, Panhellenic runs structured recruitment, and NPHC chapters intake on their own timelines, which are often separate from the formal rush calendar. The Greek community at UH has generated a solid amount of activity and discussion on review sites, which tells you there's a genuine, engaged membership base keeping things moving.
